Another Racer Has Passed

It is with great regret that we announce that another of our racers has passed away. Daryl Greenough, had been ill for approximatly a year. This Prince George racer was a long time member of the Spruce Capital Karting Association. All of those who knew him will remember him as a quiet man, who enjoyed a good laugh, and was generous to a fault. He contributed much to his home club, and to BCKCA in many ways. His soft spoken words were always well chosen. He gave great consideration to problems and was free with well thought out advise. He never publicly complained of his illness, as he was a private man. Someone close to him said that Daryl had few regrets in his life, he had lived it fully, missed very little, and enjoyed every minute of it. He will be missed, not only by his family, but also by his many friends, particularly those he raced with.

Subscriptions

David Weber of Inside Track/Inside karting contacted BCKCA recently regarding subscriptions to the magazine. As many of you know the directors of BCKCA voted to end the participation of bulk subscription to Inside Track for 2004. The main reason was the west coast coverage was very poor and quite sporadic at best.

Things have changed; Inside track now has a new reporter/photographer working on events in BC, with a commitment to cover karting in the province as it should be done. Your bulk subscriptions will expire very soon. BCKCA would like to encourage all of its members to renew their subscriptions for the next year on an individual basis. If the coverage continues as it has and it satisfies your needs, do remember that you can request that BCKCA renews it’s bulk subscription program for 2005, by telling your club reps and your clubs that you want BCKCA to renew this program.

Race Tires

A few words about tires. 2004 is a homologation year for kart racing tires. What this means is the tire manufacturers will introduce new compounds, and possibly carcass changes this year for use starting next season. They soon will or may have already ceased production of some tires currently in use. BCKCA has a three year program of tire rules to coincide with the homologation period, this gives stable regulation to the drivers, and a tool for the dealers for their tire purchase program.

The tire dealers and distributors only hold so many tires in inventory, and there can be prolonged waiting periods for new supplies to arrive. As a consequence of this there may be limited ability to obtain certain compounds. In the past there have been shortages of some tires, and the newly homologated compounds are not legal for use in specific classes. A spec tire program is not a cure for this, several organizations that ran, “one brand - one compound" programs ran into severe shortages during the last few events they ran at the end of the last homologation period.

We strongly advise all racers that have a favourite brand and compound to contact their dealers and secure firm orders for all of the tires that they will need during the rest of this season.

One sure way in the future to ease this problem is to order tires very early in the season to fill your needs for the whole season. The dealers will thank you as they will not have to hold inventory, and you will be assured of a supply. If you choose not to that, you may be faced with racing on a brand and compound that you are not familiar with, and may not offer you the grip you desire.

A Passing

It is with deep sadness we report the death of Roy Brydon. Roy passed away today May 26th 2004. Roy had not been well for a time, with diabetes related complications. Many of you will remember that Roy was the first director of karting with ASN Canada FIA. His many business interests had him in Toronto for much of his adult life. What you may not know was Roy was a long time resident of the west coast, and had many ties to motor sport both on Vancouver Island and the mainland, as well as the greater Toronto area.

Roy was a giving man, he helped many drivers both financially and equipment wise. He was involved with many venues, from open wheel to sedans, stock cars and karts. He was a promoter, a shop owner, a team owner, and a mentor. We saw him as an official and an administrator, and a strong supporter of motor sports in all of its varied forms. His later years saw him retire from active involvement with teams and sanctioning bodies, but never an idle person he took up the position as administrator of the Canadian Motor sport Hall of Fame. A job he relished.

He should be remembered as someone who worked tirelessly to see that karting progressed and moved into the future in Canada. He encouraged international racing, and he lived for motor sports in all of its various forms.

BCKCA Seat Memo

At some recent events we have noticed some drivers utilizing a seat in their karts that may be contributing to some injuries. These seats are a design that wraps around the driver and retains them even during an upset. Some checking has revealed at least three incidents where the drivers and their karts were air-bourne after contact, and the driver remained in the seated position when the kart was vertical, and inverted, allowing for the full weight of the kart to descend on them when it landed. This seems to be contributing to upper body injuries beyond our normal experience in this type of incident. Karting specifically prohibits the use of seatbelts and harness type restraints. This prohibition is a result of karts not being equipped with roll cages or roll bars.

Both experienced and new drivers should give much thought to the use of wrap around seats. A properly fitting seat will support you well enough. Many seats are too large for the driver. Used karts may have been equipped to fit another driver that was a vastly different size and shape. The proper fitting of a seat will make for a much more comfortable and secure drive. When the seat is mounted, pay very close attention to bold heads and washers that necessarily protrude into the drivers’ area. They can cause bruising and even fractured ribs, or worse. Utilize countersunk bolt heads with large taperseat washers. If you choose to utilize an unupholstered seat, pressure points can be relieved with the addition of a pad. We have seen foam sleeping mats and even computer mouse pad material used.

Use care and caution at all times when working on your kart. It is not a toy; it is a genuine open wheel racecar. Incident happen in fractions of a second and it can happen to you.

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL JUNIOR KARTERS

One of the more important decisions to impact all junior karters in our province was the decision to make full width rear bumpers mandatory for competition in British Columbia.
This rule was passed unanimously with support from all clubs.
The 4-cycle juniors started this program 1 year ago and it has saved parents lots of money and made for more enjoyable racing for the kids.

BCKCA AGM  January 24 & 25 2004

The BCKCA AGM will be held in Duncan at the Best Western Cowichan Valley Inn.

All Club reps should provide the following as per BCKCA:

Just a little reminder for club reps to make sure they have distributed the rules to their clubs as well as informing them of the upcoming AGM. Some of the points that need to be dealt with are as follows:

1) Club Reports:

Please have a type written report available for the AGM with the following information:

a. membership numbers

b. number of events held

c. any special events held

d. any difficulties encountered

e. new projects undertaken

f. what the club see as it's future

You will need to ensure that you have at least 24 copies of your club reports available at the AGM, preferably three hole punched, so they can be distributed to the member clubs and executive.

2) Nominations for Executive Positions

There will be a general election for the executive at the AGM. Russ Walsh is the elections officer, and will accept nominations for any and all who wish to stand for office.

3) AGM Minutes

There will be no distribution of the minutes of the last AGM. As the minutes are strictly the motions, they can be reviewed in the 2003 reference guide for club representatives. If there are any omissions or errors in the motions please bring them up at the AGM so we can correct them prior to be approved.

We look forward to seeing everyone over on Vancouver Island the weekend of January 24-25, 2004.

On behalf of BCKCA Executive

Don Choquer

Secretary

Rules Meeting Update

An official update will be coming from the Executive next week after their meeting.    Our region is the most diverse in the country and with that diversity comes some interesting challenges.  We believe that we are just now coming to a point where we are trying to address the concerns of the 2 types of racing programs that we run in B.C.  This is no small task and as we wade through it we will undoubtedly need to make adjustments to fine tune the program to better meet the needs of both groups.

The following is a brief overview of the meeting and some of the items discussed.

  1. The regional race format will change for the 2004 season due largely to the ASN Nationals being held in B.C. at CARTBC.  The increased work load for the clubs along with the increased expenses for karters made 2004 a perfect year to test a new format.  The region will only hold 2 events next year with some of the regional classes running at an event to be held at CARTBC and some of the classes to run at an event to be held in Quesnel.  This format will be undoubtedly be reviewed at the end of the season.
  2. Where each class will run is still undecided but a natural class allocation would be for the recreational type classes to run in Quesnel and the CIK type classes to run at CARTBC.  This will be finalized at the AGM in January.
  3. The Junior III class was a lengthy discussion and was ultimately deferred to the AGM in January.
  4. The tire rule remains unchanged.
  5. The TAG senior class replaces the Leopard class and the TAG USA rules will be utilized unless they change to TAG INTERNATIONAL and then they will be adopted.  This is a class that is currently evolving so expect changes as new engines are approved.
  6. The 80cc class now requires a B plus license.
  7. All 100cc engines require an additional silencer in the region.  Most competitors were running them last year.
  8. The 80cc class requires an ICC style silencer for 2004.
  9. The 4-cycle junior classes still use the same engines as last year.
There were many other items discussed and they will be addressed in the official report.

BCKCA Rules Meeting 2003

Remember, when analyzing these numbers, in 2002 all 4 cycle and F80 drivers did a best two out of three series. All other classes did a full 3 race series.

In general, approximately one-third of all racers did the full three race series. Nearly half the participants did one race only and did not travel out of their own area.

The controversial engine package inequity in the junior classes may have affected participation levels but the impact is unknown.

2004 BCKCA RULES MEETING

RAMADA INN

WHATCOM ROAD, ABBOTSFORD

November 15th and 16th2003

Preamble: This meeting is important for the future of the region and all clubs. We, all BCKCA volunteers, will insist on the members (every BC club) attend this meeting with the appropriate representatives and written material.

Each club is to send their 2004 BCKCA club representatives to this meeting. Take this seriously! We don’t need people at the meeting just because they are available. This has already happened with very little success. We also don’t need temporary reps., only to have substitutes come in without previous knowledge, throughout the year.

Every representative must bring with them the 2003 BCKCA manual and the 2003 rule book that includes Club, Regional and National Rules. There were two 2003 BCKCA manuals issued to each and every club last year.

This year, each club will receive 2 BCKCA manuals just like every other year of BCKCA’s existence. It is the Reps. responsibility to ensure that your club executive and membership reads and understands the BCKCA manuals.

Elections: Each year the BCKCA executive is elected. This is part of our Non-profit Society Bylaw. This will happen at the 2003 AGM in Duncan, Vancouver Island in January. Anyone wishing to stand for office will be given ample opportunity once BCKCA has appointed the Election Officer. The appointment of the Election Officer will take place at the rules meeting this November.

Since BCKCA was formed in 1998 with our first Chairman, Sam O’Young, not one person has put their name forth for election in an open call. All incumbents have been re-elected and new people have been voted in by acclamation. NOW IS YOUR CHANCE!

Stay tuned

October 3 2003

 To all BCKCA Clubs:
Yesterday, September 30 2003, was the final day for rules submissions to BCKCA. Only two clubs responded. We assume no other clubs have submissions.
It is clear that, after reading one club’s submission, their membership has not voted on the proposals prior to submitting due to the conflicting view points.
Each club that submits to BCKCA must first rationalize their proposals by having the club vote on the proposals, and secondly submit only the final club decision. BCKCA is not in the position of compiling proposals from individuals; that is the club’s job.
LET US REITERATE; THE CLUB’S SUBMISSION IS ALREADY DEFINED AS THE CLUB’S DEFINITIVE PROPOSAL AND ONE THAT YOUR CLUB REPS ARE TO ENDORSE AT THE RULES MEETING THIS NOVEMBER.

In view of this problem, we are extending the club submission date to October 15 2003 midnight. We then will only have until October 31 2003 to have everything compiled, organized and returned to all clubs for your vote on other club’s proposals at your next club meeting.

 BCKCA Executive.
